“This isn’t just a record label. We’re a full service entertainment agency,” explained Woodruffe, the company’s General Manager. He highlighted that Prosperpo caters to every area of an entertainer’s career, from legal to accounting, management, bookings, public relations and promotions and certainly, marketing and branding. Woodruffe’s name on the entertainment circuit is a solid one. He worked on building the Marlon Asher brand for many years, finally securing international management for the Chaguanas, Trinidad artiste as he continues his onward journey to commercial success. Now, his partnership with Prospero will afford Woodruffe an opportunity to aid more entertainers on their career paths. “Roy and Gillian have been a part of the promotion industry for quite some time,” he explained of the company’s founders. “They’ve entered this business with a pure heart and with the aim of supporting and developing any entertainer who desires sound, reputable service,” he said.
Two Trinidad and Tobago reggae artistes, Ras Pilot and Mr. Royal are the first to benefit from the full service label’s efforts. Both artistes will drop their new singles on July 26th. The new music, ‘Blackness’ from Mr. Royal and ‘Petty Cash’ by Ras Pilot, will be included on their individual albums, all songs already recorded. “The music you’ll hear from these Trinidad Tobago reggae artistes will sound no different from the reggae music coming out of Jamaica. The aim with all artistes, no matter the genre, is to deliver authenticity. We had these artistes team up with Calibud Music – Bobby Digital’s son,” said Woodruffe, noting that the time and effort put into their albums, will prove how committed the artistes and the label is, to pushing the talent and delivering ‘A- Class’ work.
Prospero Entertainment Ltd’s distribution label, inGrooves- a subsidiary of Universal Music Group, has offered a distribution and promotional budget to the local label, all thanks to Woodruffe’s success with Marlon Asher. “They’ve matched our budget, which is great for the artistes we’ll be managing but of course, deals will be different based on what’s desired by the artistes, producers and other entertainment stakeholders signing on,” said Woodruffe. He noted that based solely on the product being shopped, Universal Music will then make the decision on whether they should partner for the promotion.
NEW MUSIC
Presently, the team at Prospero are working on a Calypso riddim. At the helm of the project is pioneer in that arena, Carl Beaver Henderson. “They are working hard behind the scenes right now to capture the icons of Calypso, teaming them up with the youth and making inroads to keep the genre alive going into the next century,” said Woodruffe. He went on to explain that the European market has and continues to crave the sound of calypso music, something that T&T has sadly, failed to capitalize on effectively.
