Mark Myrie, the Jamaican reggae and dancehall giant the world knows best as Buju Banton, has been enjoying his freedom. He was released from US prison, having served a 9-year sentence, in December 2018 and since that time, the artiste’s spirit has been nothing short of triumphant.

On Monday night at the AC Hotel by the Marriott in New Kingston, Jamaica, the artiste celebrated his 45th birthday. He made a grand entry, showing gratitude with hearty smiles at the event which would mark his first official birthday celebration post release. Like fine wine, Buju assented to his 45th birth milestone and even with his simple and humble ways, fans of the artiste could tell that the best was yet to come.

The all white affair saw a number of well known Jamaican friends of the artiste in attendance, among them Sean Paul, Jamaica Deejay and personality Jabba and Romain Virgo. Buju’s Long Walk to Freedom Tour has seen him take stages around the Caribbean including Trinidad and a Tobago and Guyana shows hosted by High a Frequency Entertainment. Most recently, Buju crossed international waters, taking the stage in Amsterdam. His presence on stage, each time, has been nothing short of momentous, and some may say, near spiritual. At his Birthday “get together” on Monday, prior to engaging in chit chat with his friends and family, Buju prayed. It would be a symbol of his gratitude and love to the Most high God for all that he has gotten him through.

Being incarcerated for almost 10 years, for a crime one vehemently denies committing, would change a man’s life forever. Mark Myrie, the man many know and easily refer to as Buju Banton, is yet to officially speak to any media house in the aftermath of his release from US prison. Ten months ago, Buju felt freedom once again and since that time, like a bird released from a cage, the ‘Optimistic Soul’ singer has unceasingly sung – his spirit soaring most when on stage, with mic in hand.

On the weekend, Buju and a cast of other powerful Caribbean entertainers including Bunji Garlin and Fay Ann Lyons, performed for a massive crowd at Dominica’s World Creole Festival. On the heels of that, he’s unleashed a teaser video for a brand new single with Dave Kelly, one of the most successful dancehall producers in Jamaica. Kelly is known for producing Cham’s international hit, ‘Ghetto Story,’ which was later remixed by RnB hit maker, Alicia Keys. He’s also credited as the creator of the Showtime riddim- a widely popular riddim in the Caribbean. The teaser hears Buju’s vocals behind an echoing sentiment, ‘mi no trust phone,’ something that can be easily believed, considering the fact that the artist has maintained that he was entrapped ten years ago.

The latest piece of musical work will follow four singles done by Buju since his release. ‘Pay The Price’, ‘Country for Sale’, ‘Holy Ground’ and Holy Mountain, which also features Jamaica’s Sizzla Kalonji and Mavado. The latter two singles form part of DJ Khaled’s ‘Father of Asahd’ album which was released in May this year.

On October 1st, fans of reggae in New York City will be treated to a one of a kind event, when reggae sensation, Tarrus Riley graces the stage of the world renowned SOBs music venue where he’ll present music off his ‘Blending Life’s Experiences Musically’ EP.

Although listening sessions are a common occurrence in the music realm, Riley who recently delivered to rave reviews from both fans and music industry insiders, an unforgettable musical experience in his homeland of Jamaica, will replicate the latter in New York, according to his team at Destine Media. Simply and expertly, Tarrus replaced the typical album listening affair with a live band experience. “People can expect to have an up close and personal BLEM experience with Tarrus, who will be performing in the famous SOBs for the first time. This event with limited capacity will be a special event for NY,” said his publicist, Ronnie Tomlinson.

In an added bonus and to keep the night’s memories alive, the ticketed admission will include a copy of the coveted EP. Produced by Izy Beats, B.L.E.M (Blending Life’s Experiences Musically) offers a diverse offering of six songs inspired by the crooner’s personal situations.

“I’ve been in one of these songs at some point in my life,” Tarrus recently said.

Doors Open at 7pm.
