There’s an unmistakable flair when he walks into a room. Ever the gentleman, well-dressed and soft spoken, Michael St. John exudes a quiet confidence born of struggle, birthed by insurmountable challenges and an innate ability to beat the odds, time and time again.
While his story doesn’t begin with Tower Promotions, this promotional outfit is what he is most known for and what put him on the map, effectively opening doors for many successful years in the entertainment business. Starting in July 1994 with a Garnet Silk Concert, featuring Capleton and many other popular artistes, Michael St. John quickly became known as the promoter responsible for redefining the entertainment landscape of Trinidad and Tobago.
THE RISE OF TOWER PROMOTIONS
Over the next six years, Tower Promotions brought his vision to life by hosting many of the world’s biggest headliners via mega concerts each year. Concerts such as The Messengers, Sting International, The Spectrum, and The Smooth Summer Concert Series, are only a few of the events that often facilitated several thousand patrons every year. Beyond the regional dancehall artistes like The Marleys, Beenie Man, Sean Paul, Beres Hammond, Buju and Barrington Levy to name a few, the international acts that graced stages in Trinidad & Tobago from Tower Promotions included Peabo Bryson, Freddie Jackson, Jeffrey Osbourne and more.
Under Michael St. John’s guidance, Tower Promotions pioneered this country’s largest concert events bringing to our shores a range of internationally known artistes in each event, but more than that, Michael and his team led the way in structuring these large-scale productions, from innovative marketing concepts to mesmerising stage productions, delivering value for money to each patron in attendance. Tower Promotions led the way in offering patrons total satisfaction and entertainment, which laid the foundation for his future ventures and instilled in him a deep understanding of the entertainment industry. Becoming a hugely famous mainstream promoter at a time when this was an unusual career path to embark upon, he broke down barriers and shattered the proverbial glass ceilings, setting trends and standards still observed in the entertainment industrytoday.
With his rhythmically sophisticated, operatic style Michael St. John helped popularize the face and trends of nightlife in Trinidad & Tobago. He was arguably the first major promoter to consistently deliver quality productions on such magnificent and mainstream platforms.
An intriguing and cross-generational visionary, Michael expanded his business portfolio, delving into the night club and real estate industry, launching The Living Room Night Club in Arima in 2006. With weekly themed events and cameo appearances from local, regional and international artistes, The Living Room was the place to be and was quickly established as the most popular club in the east, drawing patrons by the hundreds from local, regional and international environs. Club Manager and Woman-of-Business, Shakira Mc Phearson, sings praises of her employer, delving deep into the character growth and business expansion of her employer of over 15 years.
Working at the Living Room as its General Manager from 2005 to present, Mc Phearson was an integral part of the foundation of The Living Room, and its 2006 construction and planning. “There is always so much excitement around Mike and the part he played in the industry. His goal is always to make people happy.”
The 2008 evolution into Castro’s Sports Bar soon evolved into a full restaurant featuring both international and local fare.
