On Friday night, the people of Trinidad and Tobago had something very special to celebrate. At 76 years old, the Calypso Queen of the World, Calypso Rose had secured the World Album of the Year Award at the Victoire de la Musique award ceremony in France. Rose secured the win with her album,”Far from Home”, which was released on the Because Music label on June 3, 2016 and has since made it to Platinum Record status.

Calypso Rose has made us all proud.

In Trinidad, as the ‘Leave Me Alone’ singer possibly sat relishing the moment thousands of miles away, her sons of Trinbagonian soil, Machel Montano, Bunji Garlin and his entertainer wife, Fay-Ann Lyons, represented her, telling of the astounding and well deserved accomplishment the Caribbean Calypso queen, had achieved. Bunji, in his performance at the much touted, Ladies Night Out affair said Rose had put everyone in check, making it clear that even at her age, she could show the young ones how a ‘Grammy’ is won. Fay Ann took the opportunity to remind Trinbagonian fetters that the culture of the land should not be disposed of. She encouraged soca music lovers to party, sweat, jump up, wine down and create memories, noting that it was all a part of the country’s culture.

Machel Montano with whom Rose collaborated on the Kubiyashi remixed version of ‘Leave Me Alone,’ also highlighted the accomplishment of the Tobago born music maker, asking all Tobagonians to put their hands in the air, before sharing the song with the entire crowd that had gathered for the annual ladies event. Calypso Rose is an internationally celebrated Caribbean entertainer. When she took the podium to accept her award in France on Friday, it was certainly clear that she is adored worldwide. What also stood out was her natural inclination, it seemed, to remain true to country, true to Diaspora, true to self. She had spoken with her Trinbagonian accent in tact and steel pan was brought to the fore even when she delivered a live performance for the award attendees. With much passion in her heart and music in her soul we anticipate that there’s much more to come from this amazing Calypsonian and so we say, Go Rose,Go!
