Social Media had been relatively quiet prior to 12 midnight but as the competitors rolled out, came bits of social commentary among the man on the street, some saying, Sekon Sta had truly impressed and others crediting Devon Matthews and Ella Andall on a great performance. By the time Voice took the stage many seemed to have been sold.

In the end, the reigning Monarch would retain his crown, having delivered a stellar rendition of his hit single, ‘Far From Finished’- a song that he’d marketed strongly from the very beginning, having completed a video in time for the start of Carnival 2017. Orlando Octave’s ‘Single’ performance would earn him second place bragging rights while Devon Matthews, a radio personality and artiste, who has been working arduously to hone his craft, would be given the third place prize. Mathews, in a social media post on the heels of his performance said, “Daddy that was for you. Love and miss you. God knows.” His father had passed away in late 2016.

Terri Lyons, though touted by many as the one to steal the show, didn’t seem to have enough to wow the judges, despite the fact that her performance of ‘I Am Lyon’ included an appearance by her multiple time Road March and Soca Monarch king, patriarch, Super Blue.

Many are now calling for the International Soca Monarch competition to be re-thought, revamped and reinvigorated. This year’s event was dubbed ‘a cooler event’ but even so, many who had been sure to attend in years gone by, opted for something else this year.
