In the United States, celebs are stepping up and standing strong in solidarity against gun violence at tonight’s Academy Awards. People Magazine says celebs will likely rock orange American flag pins on the red carpet in a bid to raise awareness for the need to do more, when it comes to gun control legislation.
Last month, a teenager opened fire on students at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida, killing 17. The orange flag pins are from an advocacy group called, Everytown for Gun Safety, an organization dedicated to ending gun violence and raising awareness. Many celebrities have voiced their disdain for the spate of gun violence across the United States, over the years. Actress, Gabriel Union remarked, “This does not have to be our collective reality. How many more? How many children must not make it home?,” in the aftermath of the Florida shooting.
Several big names in international entertainment have donated to the effort, among them Oprah Winfrey and George Clooney.
Tonight marks the 90th Academy Awards event. A record 40 women have received Oscar nominations outside of acting this year, including in traditionally male-dominated categories such as cinematography, directing and film editing. RnB sensational, Mary J Blige is among the nominees for her supporting role in the film, MudBound.
