As strange as it may sound, Soca was not the genre of music that brought Ding Dong into the spotlight. As he explained it, a random opportunity while creating an advertisement for an event with the artist, Voice, at Zen nightclub, saw him create a dancehall song called, “Stay in Yuh Lane.” From there, the only direction was forward.

Since that time, Viking Ding Dong has unleashed 20 singles. He says he has a lot of people who write for him, however he has written about three songs on his own. ‘Drink and Party’ or DAP, was written by Kit Israel, Jelani Shaw, Ding Dong and Kevin Williams, and according to the artist, it was the fastest he’s ever been able to deliver a song. “It all came together by Kit Isreal. He sent the idea and we sat in the studio and we started writing. It was one of the fastest songs I’ve ever done in my life. It took like a week and everything happened.”

RADIO AIRPLAY

An incredibly sensitive topic of discussion, Ding Dong did not hold back on the topic of being a radio personality and artist. He made it clear that while he acknowledges the perks associated with being a part of the radio fraternity, as an artist, he does not believe it matters altogether.

“I don’t think radio play can enhance your ability as an artist because the soca industry is a more ‘live’ feel. If you can’t bring it live, the radio only gives you play. There are plenty people who are on radio and airplay does nothing for them,” he said, adding, “It depends on the quality of your music.”

Ding Dong with the Viking Family.

Ding Dong told us that he’s always wanted to be a singer. He said he was grateful for the opportunity to see first hand, the success of Fay Ann Lyons and Bunji Garlin, having become a part of their Vikings camp. “Being a part of the Vikings, it helped to be around them. Noticing their achievements is what enhanced my passion to do better as an artist,” he affirmed.
