EBUZZTTThe sudden death of Peter (Peetah) Morgan- lead singer of the Morgan Heritage Family, has left many in a state of disbelief. The 47-year-old was confirmed dead by family members on Sunday, February 25th. Immediately, fellow entertainers and cohorts in the entertainment fraternity expressed shock and sadness at the news. “We lost one of our musical brothers, one of the most beautiful and distinct voices in our music, “ wrote reggae songbird, Beres Hammond. His sentiments were echoed by many others.
Earlier today, in Trinidad and Tobago, organisers of the Redemption Concert event – the biggest annual reggae event in T&T, expressed its regret and sadness on the artiste’s passing, noting that Peetah, Gramps and Mojo were a part of the one of Redemption’s earliest concert events. “We are deeply saddened by the loss of a true music icon, Peter “Peetah” Morgan. Our heartfelt condolences go out to the Morgan Heritage family, fans and friends during this difficult time. The Redemption family is blessed to have had him grace our stage and share his gift. Peetah’s extraordinary talent will forever be remembered and cherished,” a social media caption read. A video recalling the group’s pre-event promotion, and a brief piece of Peetah’s performance was posted.
Morgan Heritage had been the headline act at the event’s third installment back in 2016. Last year, in what was its eighth staging of the reggae concert, Buju Banton headlined, drawing thousands to the Queen’s Park Savannah in Port-of-Spain. On the passing of his dear friend and brother in music, Buju too expressed hurt and sadness.
He wrote:
Over twenty five years ago, I was invited to listen to a new group on the horizon. I was in NYC. I went to a place called Bushwick, Brooklyn to listen to this set of new musicians/artists. I was completely in love with the sound, the work ethic and the good vibe I felt. That day, I immediately added them to my European tour dates and would go on to bring that sound to the world with the help of Penthouse’s Donovan Germain. We have always kept it honest with all we have done for our people and people of the world by extension. I spent the last two weeks of your life with you, working on a very special project only to wake up today learning you took a short cut Peter. I am so saddened by this sudden turn of events. You are totally a reggae music superstar who gave from where our father said we should, our hearts. All those memories, all that laughter, all those tours. I am going to miss you Peter and I will comfort myself with this thought. You cannot come to us but we must come to where you are.Until then Peter, I love you. The brother I never had.”
