Soca’s Biggest Songwriter Says, “Now We’ll Have to Do What We Should’ve Been Doing All Along.”

The echo of Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley’s statement that there would be no Trinidad and Tobago carnival in 2021, has sent ripples around the world, this as many people who usually look forward to the biggest street party in the world, have been forced to come to terms with the startling reality that Covid-19’s damaging effects may very well meander into another year.

For some, questions related to whether Trinidad and Tobago’s leader should have been so blatant in delivering the news that would essentially mean lost income for thousands in the industry, have arisen. Many argue that no consultation on the prospects for the festival was entertained and as such, the blatant disregard for so many who feed their families from what is the cultural embodiment of a people, seemed like a slap in the face.

Soca songwriter, Jason ‘Shaft’ Bishop, the man behind thousands of Carnival anthems, including Destra’s ‘Lucy’, Patrice Roberts’ ‘Big Girl Now, ‘Peter Ram’s ‘All Ah We’ and Machel Montano’s, ‘Beat It’ and countless others, spoke with Ebuzztt exclusively, on Thursday. He said he understood the importance of the decision, but said it wasn’t the way to do it.
