The Miya Marcano Foundation has been set up and is now active. The foundation seeks to support, educate and provide resources to families of missing persons, while advocating for the protection of students and those most vulnerable in the US. A post on social media by Marcano’s step mother, well known carnival personality, Giselle ‘The Wassi One’ Blanche, directed supporters to follow @miyamarcanofdn on all social media platforms and visit www.miyamarcanofdn.com to sign up for the foundation’s newsletter and if so driven, to donate funds to the foundation, instead of sending the family flowers.
The tragic end of Miya’s young life came just prior to the Miami Carnival celebration, which culminates today. The young woman went missing on September 24th and was found after a week long search led to the discovery of her body on October 2nd. Maintenance worker, 27-year-old Armando Caballero, the main suspect in Miya’s disappearance and subsequent death, was found dead by apparent suicide, just days after her disappearance.
Miya’s family is now accusing the authorities of botching the case, saying she had been obsessively pursued by a maintenance worker who killed himself before he was identified as the prime suspect in her disappearance. Video shot by family on September 25th at around 3:45am hear a confrontation between relatives and Caballero.
In a statement released by their lawyer, Marcano’s relatives said they had asked the sheriff’s office earlier that night to check on Marcano at the Arden Villas, the complex where she lived and worked, when she failed to board a flight home to visit her family on September 24th. According to the family, deputies searched Marcano’s apartment with her roommate and found evidence of tampering on her window and a dresser that blocked the door to her bedroom.
Alarmed by the deputies’ discovery, Marcano’s family journeyed to Orlando to check on her. It was at that time that they captured the footage at her apartment complex.

Internationally loved and embraced Soca band, KesTheBand delivered yet another unforgettable moment for Caribbean music last Saturday, September 5th – this time at the DC Jazz Festival. It was there, in the midst of the enjoyment that a special opportunity presented itself – Kees Dieffentaller would meet the global music icon, Stevie Wonder.
The surprise appearance marked a continuation of a weekend that placed KestheBand and Caribbean music at the center of some of the most significant cultural moments of Labour Day weekend. The set included an uptempo lyrical mashup of “I Just Called To Say I Love You” and “Savannah Grass,” which received thunderous applause from adoring fans.
Crediting his parents in an emotional social media post following their debut at DC Jazz Fest, lead singer, Kees Dieffenthaller shared that the Stevie Wonder hit “was the first record I had on repeat as a child.” The moment was a powerful one as Soca music and a Trinidad and Tobago band that dedicatedly promotes the genre along with their country, came face to face with one of the most influential global artistes in music history.
Just one night earlier, on Friday, September 4th, KesTheBand electrified Soca Fest at Brooklyn museum in New York, where the band was introduced by Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani. The appearance brought together Caribbean music, culture and community in one of New York’s most prominent Labor Day weekend celebrations and venues.
Kees went on to serve as an Honorary Grand Marshal of the West Indian Day Parade. The honor was shared with dancehall and reggae superstar, Buju Banton.
