A Pregnant Terri Lyons made the trip to St. Maarten with her SASS family.

While she said she’d be taking it a bit slow, Terri Lyons apparently couldn’t miss out on the trip to St. Maarten- the island that boasts Dutch and French persuasions and was alive with carnivalesque energy last weekend. On the road with her SASS family, Terri shone according to band leader, Nadia Batson. We spoke with Batson this morning and she said St. Maarten was incredible. The island’s carnival – a bit different from the Trinidad and Tobago experience featured acts like Hip Hop artiste, Busta Rhymes, Jamaica’s Konshens, Lady Saw and RDX among others. Representing T&T hard however, was SASS and from all indications, the ladies of Soca left quite an impression.

Nadia has been very busy in recent weeks. Having recently relocated the band room to East Trinidad, Batson told ETCETERABUZZ.COM that while the move required a lot of her energy and time, everyone’s really comfortable now and they’re all very happy. She’s also been writing a lot more than even she may have expected she would be- having undertaken the task of penning lyrics for artistes across the Caribbean. But if you think that’s it- think again! Batson told us she has a single that’s being mixed at the moment – something she’s calling ‘Prisoner.’ Pretty busy lady indeed!

On Terri’s pregnancy, Nadia who is engaged to producer Don Iko of Martian Music, said everyone is ecstatic for Lyons. “It’s a beautiful part of life and a beautiful part of being a woman. Women are so strong- she can have that baby and boom bang, she’ll be back out to work as normal,” she laughed.

Terri has been getting quite a lot of compassion from the camp- this of course because she doesn’t seem to remember at times, that she’s carrying a little one. “We have to tell Terri to slow down sometimes because it’s like she forgets she’s pregnant,” said Batson. Terri has however indicated that she won’t be traveling with the band following last weekend’s St. Maarten show, until after her baby is born.

Fellow performer, Konshens was also in St. Maarten for the island's carnival.

Fellow performer, Jamaica’s Konshens was also in St. Maarten for the island’s carnival.

Ahead of T&T’s 2014 season of revelry, Nadia has already made connections with a few artistes with whom she’ll be collaborating. “I’m doing something with Lava Man, Teddyson John from St. Lucia and some other artistes up the islands,” she told us, reiterating that she’s been hard at work. And in case you’re wondering whether this dedicated singer/songwriter ever has a little time to play around- well, we’ll tell you that she does. Nadie says she’s about to treat herself to the brand new Samsung 4 smartphone which was launched in Trinidad on the weekend. Not sure if she’ll be getting hers from Bmobile because by all indications, the phones were sold out. Then again- it’s Nadia…she’ll have one by the end of the week!

The ‘Manager’ singer is off to Boston next week for a Mother’s Day show there. She said promoters have been calling for her to come out there for some time so she’s pretty excited to finally be making the trip.

A riddim built on pure Jamaican nostalgia that’s dominating with several acclaimed artistes releasing hit singles, the ‘Hill And’ Gully’ folk riddim is undeniably a major influencer this year. Like butter, several releases smoothly resonate, with artistes like Masicka, Mr. Vegas, Kees Dieffenthaller, Valiant, Elephant Man and Sheneil Muir delivering catchy singles for the masses.

Outside of multiple releases produced by Jamaican DJ/ Singer/ Songwriter/ Stephen ‘Di Genius’ McGregor, Trinidad and Tobago artiste, Anisha, has risen to the occasion, urging social transformation using her creativity as the vessel. “Plea for Peace is meant to uplift communities and spark conversation because I believe music can preserve tradition, while creating space for meaningful dialogue,” said the Belmont,Trinidad native.

Known in creative spaces as The Goddess of Love, Anisha was raised in Belle-Eau Road in Belmont. She understands the need for thought provoking messages through music. “I compose my own songs and I’ve been involved in music for several years,” she said, explaining that she uses music as a tool to express herself, tell stories and tap into her emotions while addressing issues that affect communities.

For Anisha, the Hill and Gully Riddim offers music lovers a timeless cultural connection. “I felt it was a riddim that could help carry this message of peace to both the young and the old in a way that’s relatable and impactful,” said the singer. Acknowledging the criticism by veteran Jamaican broadcaster, Fae Ellington over some of the lyrics sung by artistes on the traditional folk riddim, Anisha says she respects Ms. Ellington’s perspective. “I respect her perspective because cultural and musical traditions are important and should always be valued.” She however admits that music continues to evolve as a reflection of society. “Each artiste chooses to use music to express himself/herself based on personal experience, however my approach with ‘Plea for Peace,’ was to honor the riddim’s cultural significance by using it to address an issue that is affecting my country, Trinidad and Tobago.”

Anisha says she admires the dedication to peace, shown by fellow T&T artiste, Orlando Octave. “We share a similar passion for spreading positive messages through music. I often refer to him as ‘The Prince of Peace,” she said, noting that she would be honored to work with Orlando, if the opportunity presents itself. “My mission as an artiste is to use my music as a bridge that brings people together, rather than divides humanity. ‘Plea for Peace is more than just a song. It’s a reminder that despite the challenges we face, peace, love and unity are still very possible if we choose to lift each other up.”
