Bunji Garlin made it to BET’s 106th and Park twice in 2014.

The past year was an epic one for many of Trinidad and Tobago’s entertainment professionals. It was a year of firsts for many and it certainly proved to be the year of Soca music’s pivotal step into the global music industry. This past year saw Bunji Garlin make inroads into the mainstream music market, the likes of which many could feel proud of, whether Trinbagonian or merely a member of the Caribbean Diaspora. Garlin toured the United States with his VP records family, performing on BET twice alongside his wife, Fay-Ann Lyons. Separately though, Machel Montano was also a big headline maker this past season, having pulled the hat trick at the International Soca Monarch in Trinidad by reclaiming his Power Soca Monarch title. He was however beaten in the Groovy category by the man with the big lyrics, production know-how and not to mention, melodious vocals, Kerwin Du Bois.

Montano was however bent on making his own personal inroads, much like Garlin had begun to do, in  2014. It was this past year that Machel was again nominated for the Soul Train Music award in the  category of Best International Performance and in late November, the world found out that he did in fact win the award. He joined Bunji who had also won the award one year earlier, in sealing the deal for Soca music, in the United States. This past year, Machel also announced his role in the Bollywood movie Scandalous, which is currently filming in Trinidad.

It wasn’t only a good year for these two headliners however. Young up and comer, Flippo rode a pretty awesome wave at the beginning of the year and in the summer, he cemented his name among the masses, releasing additional music outside of the Carnival season, the likes of which fans would lap up, without hesitation. Other artistes like Destra, Olatunji, Kees and Patrice Roberts also enjoyed a successful year in 2014. Patrice Roberts proved that even without a manager in her corner, following the sudden break up with Ian Pantin, she could handle her business. Recently, the young Toco hottie told ETCETERABUZZ that she’s looking forward to a whirlwind Carnival season- this after spending her Christmas holiday overseas where she had performance obligations to fulfil.

We ended the year with some ups and downs no doubt; one of the sour moments of the year was news of Kees Dieffenthaller being robbed at gunpoint along Ariapita Avenue but on the flip side, the artiste himself said he wouldn’t be deterred by the occurrence, adding that life was meant to be lived and one bad experience didn’t mean that he would love his country any less. In the spotlight just recently and something we think stood out most this season was a photo op shared by Bunji Garlin, Machel Montano and Fay-Ann Lyons. The trio had performed at Major Lazer’s Sunset Festival at the O2 Park in Chaguaramas. Despite the moment shared however, news that Montano and Garlin still remain distant and show no sign of collaborating anytime soon, has left a bitter taste in the mouths of many soca fans.

We rally on into 2015 though, hopeful that this coming season will bring greater music, greater experiences and a more solid and stable platform for up and coming soca artistes like Sekon Sta, Olatunji Yearwood, Erphaan Alves, Patrice Roberts, 5 Star Akil, Tobago’s K Kay, Devon Matthews and the countless others who are giving their all to show the world that Soca music is sweet music, worthy of being heard worldwide.

Finally, we wish to thank all the soca artistes who delivered great music for the world to chip to at various carnivals across the world this year. From Grenada to Barbados, Nottinghill, Toronto, Miami, New York and the world over, Soca is being heard and appreciated. We tip our hats to you all. Soca is ours and you are our vibe generators- no one better than the other, but each one of you and your work, very necessary!

Happy New Year from the ETCETERABUZZ family.

She may be a Trinbagonian soca artiste but she’s also a proud Caribbean woman, so it was only right that rapper, Drake’s team at October’s Very Own – OVO, deliver to the entertainer, an OVO branded dominos set. It was quite possibly the package inclusion that brought out Belfon’s excitement earlier this week, when she received and opened it up.

Denise has been basking in the joy of being a part of Drake’s recently released, Maid of Honor’ album – her single ‘Work’ sampled on a track called, ‘BBW’. Fans, pretty much elated by the news, have been expressing their congratulations to the New York based singer, many saying it was only a matter of time before this type of breakthrough came for her.

Denise’s journey in music began decades ago, and even though her presence on the Soca circuit in the Caribbean has been limited for some time, her past hits have proven to be legacy-leavers, with DJs, artistes and social media users quite often returning to her sound.

The OVO gift package included merchandise and the special Dominos game set, something Denise automatically hailed out her Jamaican friends on, noting that they’d me meeting up for a game soon. When news of the sample emerged in May, many questioned whether Belfon had agreed to the use of her work. She has since allayed all concerns, saying all is above board on the project.

A riddim built on pure Jamaican nostalgia that’s dominating with several acclaimed artistes releasing hit singles, the ‘Hill And’ Gully’ folk riddim is undeniably a major influencer this year. Like butter, several releases smoothly resonate, with artistes like Masicka, Mr. Vegas, Kees Dieffenthaller, Valiant, Elephant Man and Sheneil Muir delivering catchy singles for the masses.

Outside of multiple releases produced by Jamaican DJ/ Singer/ Songwriter/ Stephen ‘Di Genius’ McGregor, Trinidad and Tobago artiste, Anisha, has risen to the occasion, urging social transformation using her creativity as the vessel. “Plea for Peace is meant to uplift communities and spark conversation because I believe music can preserve tradition, while creating space for meaningful dialogue,” said the Belmont,Trinidad native.

Known in creative spaces as The Goddess of Love, Anisha was raised in Belle-Eau Road in Belmont. She understands the need for thought provoking messages through music. “I compose my own songs and I’ve been involved in music for several years,” she said, explaining that she uses music as a tool to express herself, tell stories and tap into her emotions while addressing issues that affect communities.

For Anisha, the Hill and Gully Riddim offers music lovers a timeless cultural connection. “I felt it was a riddim that could help carry this message of peace to both the young and the old in a way that’s relatable and impactful,” said the singer. Acknowledging the criticism by veteran Jamaican broadcaster, Fae Ellington over some of the lyrics sung by artistes on the traditional folk riddim, Anisha says she respects Ms. Ellington’s perspective. “I respect her perspective because cultural and musical traditions are important and should always be valued.” She however admits that music continues to evolve as a reflection of society. “Each artiste chooses to use music to express himself/herself based on personal experience, however my approach with ‘Plea for Peace,’ was to honor the riddim’s cultural significance by using it to address an issue that is affecting my country, Trinidad and Tobago.”

Anisha says she admires the dedication to peace, shown by fellow T&T artiste, Orlando Octave. “We share a similar passion for spreading positive messages through music. I often refer to him as ‘The Prince of Peace,” she said, noting that she would be honored to work with Orlando, if the opportunity presents itself. “My mission as an artiste is to use my music as a bridge that brings people together, rather than divides humanity. ‘Plea for Peace is more than just a song. It’s a reminder that despite the challenges we face, peace, love and unity are still very possible if we choose to lift each other up.”
