He’s possibly one of the most loved dancehall artistes of the new generation of acts, his rise to stardom having been somewhat quick and his approach pretty grounded. Popcaan- real name, Andre Sutherland performed in Antigua at the Antigua Trades and Labour Union rally in Fort James on Monday and it was there that he was detained by police officers after a a conflict reportedly erupted on stage.

Popcaan has been released.

Popcaan has been released.

According to the Antigua Observer, the 27 year old artiste who recently collaborated with internationally acclaimed rapper, Drake, was taken into custody following a brawl with one police officer. It is alleged that the entertainer had been attempting to intervene as officers were removing patrons who had climbed onto the stage. The newspaper reports that the artiste became incensed upon seeing the forceful manner in which the patrons were being treated. He objected to this and was reportedly pushed by the police officer. Thereafter, it is said that Popcaan continued his performance, meting out a diss via song to the police officer. A subsequent confrontation is said to have taken place, leading to the artiste’s arrest.

Popcaan was however released after paying a small fine of EC $1000 for misdemeanour battery, having pleaded guilty to the charge- this according to Urban Islandz.

What happened next has led to numerous heartfelt comments on Instagram, fans of the ‘Never Sober’ artiste sending kudos to Popcaan’s mother who many refer to as Ms. Rhona. “Swear my eyes full of water…Bless up Unruly Boss,” one fan wrote on Instagram. The comment and others like it were ushered in after the entertainer posted a video of his embrace with his mother, after being released.

Popcaan has been enjoying a awesome ride in the entertainment world so far, and for what it’s worth, most would agree that this unfortunate situation is is perhaps simply a stumbling block, often experienced my many, along the way.

Being incarcerated for almost 10 years, for a crime one vehemently denies committing, would change a man’s life forever. Mark Myrie, the man many know and easily refer to as Buju Banton, is yet to officially speak to any media house in the aftermath of his release from US prison. Ten months ago, Buju felt freedom once again and since that time, like a bird released from a cage, the ‘Optimistic Soul’ singer has unceasingly sung – his spirit soaring most when on stage, with mic in hand.

On the weekend, Buju and a cast of other powerful Caribbean entertainers including Bunji Garlin and Fay Ann Lyons, performed for a massive crowd at Dominica’s World Creole Festival. On the heels of that, he’s unleashed a teaser video for a brand new single with Dave Kelly, one of the most successful dancehall producers in Jamaica. Kelly is known for producing Cham’s international hit, ‘Ghetto Story,’ which was later remixed by RnB hit maker, Alicia Keys. He’s also credited as the creator of the Showtime riddim- a widely popular riddim in the Caribbean. The teaser hears Buju’s vocals behind an echoing sentiment, ‘mi no trust phone,’ something that can be easily believed, considering the fact that the artist has maintained that he was entrapped ten years ago.

The latter two singles form part of DJ Khaled’s ‘Father of Asahd’ album which was released in May this year.
