Twitter and Facebook were abuzz with excitement last evening and while there may have been many other eventful happenings across the world that warranted such an occurrence, much of it was certainly owed to the American Music Awards held in Los Angeles, California. Among the big winners of the coveted award was none other than Barbadian beauty, Rihanna who was honored with an Icon award at the young age of 25.

Presented by her mother, Guyana born, Monica Fenty, the award was the first of its kind ever presented. Bill Maher in his pre-presentation speech said Rihanna had become the voice of our time. Having sang her hit single, ‘Diamonds,’ just seconds prior, the young, fashionable trendsetter was then presented with the award by her mom who said, “First of all I’d like to say all praises and honor be to God Almighty through Jesus. Rihanna, I’m so proud of you tonight. I know the journey in your career has not always been an easy one but tonight I applaud and admire you for being so strong and so positive and so humble and so focused. It’s amazing how you always manage to take good from all your experiences. I’m so blessed to be a part of this historic moment. I just want to say how proud I am to present to you, the first ever AMA iconic award.”

Rihanna has been adored by many across the globe since she stepped into the international spotlight. Last night, rapper, Jay Z who is credited with discovering the pop princess, said her success thus far was amazing. Over the years, Rihanna has never forgotten her roots, constantly paying homage to Barbados and frequently flying to the island for vacations and carnivals. Last night she reminisced on her youth while accepting the award from her mother. “Just about 20 years ago is when I really started making your life a living hell with my annoying little husky man voice as you would call it, and I mean just disrupting the entire neighborhood, Westbury Road, Barbados, they could tell you that’s the truth. I annoyed every one of my neighbors. I can’t believe at 25 years old I’m holding an Icon Award. That sounds weird saying that out loud.”

Rihanna made a very strong fashion statement at the AMA's. Her wrapped hairstyle may set a trend in motion, some have predicted.

The Caribbean community was certainly filled with pride last evening. In recent weeks, the Caribbean has been on a roll it would seem. Bunji Garlin and Machel Montano received nominations for the Soul Train Music Awards set to be aired on Centric on December 1st and Jamaica’s Tessanne Chin has been proving her worth as a vocalist on the hit reality television show, The Voice. In a recent statement, Bunji Garlin said,”The time is here and right now. Strike with the weight of Thor’s hammer while the iron is hot. We are soca and we exist,” in reference to mention made in the FADER Magazine in NYC, of his single ‘It’s A Carnival’ produced by Major Lazer.
