She’s in school. Never mind the social media chatter, the buzz about her lifestyle choices, her dress code or her hairstyle, she’s in school and she’s in it, to win it! DJ Lila, the Caribbean’s newest female DJ sensation, commands an Instagram following of 136,000 fans. She has only 53 posts on that page.

In an era where the digital numbers do matter, ‘Lila ah lead’. Her trending status online and on the ground, places this 17-year-old in a position of mass influence over her peers. She’s studying creative studies, positioning her career with purpose. “Music has always been a big part of my life,” she told us recently. She said for that reason, it’s basically been her life aspiration. Today, at a time when a pandemic has proven that the world can change in an instant, and with proof that non-reliance on a digitised world is now impossible, DJ Lila says there are pros and cons.

WANNA KNOW WHAT THE NEXT 5 YEARS LOOKS LIKE?

Lila’s the daughter of Trinidad and Tobago reggae and soca artist, Ziggy Rankin. He raised her on his own. He spoke with us about her upbringing, explaining how she grew steadily into the music sensation she has now become.

A part of the entertainment industry for many years, Ziggy Rankin knows oh too well, the rigours of making it in the game. He applauds his daughter for her persistence over the years.

Lila admits that her father has supported her wholeheartedly from the very beginning. Now, with her eyes set on the future, Lila says her heart is on further development. She anticipates opening her own DJ school within the next 5 years and also becoming a mainstay on radio.

Ziggy Rankin Speaks on The Youth.

Now a grown man, Ziggy Rankin understands the journey to adulthood. His music has never swayed from positivity but he admits that for many youth, time is needed for maturity to step in. He says age brings reason, admitting that he too, experienced much of what today’s youth are faced with. He said maturity comes with time.

In Trinidad and Tobago and across the Caribbean, the dreams and passions of many young people are often crushed by the hopes and dreams of their parents or society for that matter. Today’s youth are however digitally driven, and unmoving in their desire to make it, doing just what they enjoy doing. Ziggy says it’s time governments and agencies realise what’s taking place and rather than fight the movement, engage the youth to utilise their passion for the greater good of country and world.

DJ Lila has further embarked on a career as an artist. She recently released a song called, “Badmind.”
