The story of the incomparable, Calypso Rose – an icon and Calypso stalwart of Trinidad and Tobago, will be brought to life in a highly acclaimed production, ‘Queen of The Road- The Calypso Rose Musical.’ The production debuts at the Central Bank Auditorium on May 10th and the entertainer herself is excited to return to T&T, for the prestigious occasion.
Written and directed by Rhoma Spencer and presented by YES Productions, Queen of the Road – The Calypso Rose Musical, is a soul-stirring experience that will capture the hearts and minds of Trinidad and Tobago, say organisers.
Under the distinguished patronage of T&T President, Her Excellency Christine C. Kangaloo, the musical will debut on May 10th at 7:30pm, with repeat shows carded for May 11th and 12th at 6:30pm. “I am happy to know that the story of Calypso Rose will be told in Trinidad and I can’t wait to be there,” said the 83-year-old singer. The Calypso musical takes a journey down memory lane, recounting the life of Rose, whose real name is Linda McCartha Monica Sandy- Lewis, by fusing some of her most loved songs from her repertoire, with classics like, ‘Tempo’, ‘Fire In Yuh Wire’, ‘I Thank Thee’, ‘Her Majesty’ and many more.
Stacey Sobers-Abraham, known for her vocal prowess and her NWAC 2018 Calypso Queen reign, steps into the spotlight as Calypso Rose and embodies the spirit of Rose in her delivery. The Queen of the Road production was brought to life at a workshop in 2023 at Hart House Theatre in Toronto, Canada. Spencer shared, “I cast her because I simply found that she looked like Rose, only to find out when I approached her that she is called, ‘Young Rose’ at home by some members of the public. What a coincidence!”
Part proceeds from the event’s ticket sales go to the Black Collar Creative Foundation – which was launched in October 2023 to honour the legacy of Janine Charles-Farray. Janine wore several hats and sat on various boards and committees in the Creative Sector, which included the National Carnival Museum and the Caribbean School of Dancing.
The foundation’s objective is to assist creative sector entities with their start-ups or special projects and provide support to firmly establish and sustain their venture in the spirit of entrepreneurship.
