Day 36 – Drupatee

The longest standing Queen of Chutney Soca in Trinidad and Tobago and the world for that matter, is none other than Drupatee Ramgoolal. The woman who gave the world “Roll Up De Tassa” –a refrain that’s probably stuck in the brains of most T&T nationals, remains well respected in the cultural landscape of Trinidad and Tobago.

From as far back as 1988 Drupatte a native of Penal, South Trinidad, had stolen the hearts of Chutney soca lovers, delivering “Roll Up De Tassa”, a song that would become a Road March contender. Over the years, Drupatee has given fans songs like Pepper, Hotter than a Chulha, Careless Driver, ‘Motilal,’ ‘Tassawalley,’ ‘Manzalina’ and most recently, ‘Real Unity’ alongside Machel Montano.

Drupatee is certainly credited for creating a space for East-Indian artistes in the Carnival arena. Her delivery and the subsequent success of ‘Roll Up De Tassa’ marked the beginning of what is now a milti million-dollar industry within the carnival landscape.
