Archived: The Caribbean’s Damn Hot! Drake, Nicki, FayAnn, Rih Prove It!

Everyone wants to be “Caribbean”, whether they admit it or not. Doesn’t matter what island, they yearn to rock it like we do. Caribbean energy and vibe’s been making headlines in recent days and weeks like nothing else. Drake’s new 22 track playlist as he coins it- “More Life”, “scans like 80 minutes of club music from Canada, America, the UK, the West Indies, and Africa on shuffle,” writes Pitchfork.com. Meanwhile, Trinidad and Tobago born Nicki Minaj is proving that she’s a game changer and a winning one at that.

Fay Ann’s “Break The World” made it to #3 on the Billboard Reggae Chart.

Soca heavyweight, Fay Ann Lyons may not be receiving the praise she so deserves- this after her debut album, “Break The World” stood at #3 on the Billboard Reggae Chart upon its debut. The achievement was a first for an individual artist album in the Soca genre. Despite the lack of fanfare at home in Trinidad and Tobago, the achievement was duly noted with Jamaica’s national newspaper, The Gleaner, paying pretty close attention.

Minaj meanwhile has been repping for the Caribbean the only way she seemingly knows how- by twerking her heavy butt and winning! Whether her butt antics on social media is meant to rep the region or not, she’s definitely sending a subliminal message about Caribbean women-, They WIN! On March 20th, the “Anaconda” singer surpassed the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin, as the female artiste with the most Billboard Hot 100 hits. She’s up to 76.

Then there’s Rihanna. What hasn’t she done? The Bajan pop princess can now add series actress to her  resume. Last night Rihanna made a cameo on A&E’s Bates Motel as Marione Crane. Rihanna went live on Inatagram as she caught her debut performance on the show. It’s unclear how long she’ll be appearing.

“I couldn’t be more honoured to have the street that I was raised on, the street that I grew up on . . . my dreams were born on this very street right here. I know that the saying believe in your dreams sounds cliché but I guarantee you that the only thing that got me here was believing in my dreams. I never doubted it.” – Rihanna.

The internationally acclaimed singer, actress and philanthropist was yesterday honored in the country of her birth, Barbados on the occasion of Barbados’ 51st Independence. The renaming of the popular Westbury New Road to Rihanna Drive took place amid inclement weather and among guests like Barbados’ Prime Minister, Fruendel Stuart and the island’s Opposition Leader, Mia Mottley.

Yesterday, Rihanna offered advice to those with big dreams in the audience, saying that while there were days when she was doubtful and discouraged, prior to making it out of Barbados to pursue her dreams, she kept the faith. “It really was just faith, that childlike faith and even now, when I get a little bit discouraged or doubtful, it’s the thing that I go back to, having faith in God. I want to encourage not just the people of Westbury New Road and the community but all the people of Barbados, all the young women and young men, who have dreams and think that the world is up against them, it is possible so just keep believing. Never forget that faith could go a very, very long way,” she said.

The Caribbean born superstar  rocked a deep yellow colored dress with an updo that showed off her unique features. The bestowed honor at home comes on the heels of Rihanna’s launch of her Fenty Beauty line a few months ago.
